Andy Goldsworthy, 1987

Andy Goldsworthy first visited Grizedale as a student in the late 1970’s, working as an assistant to David Nash in 1977. He then returned in 1985 and the relationship with Grizedale appears to have been ground-breaking for both, with Goldsworthy producing works that were ambitious both in terms of his career to date and the resources used by Grizedale in their production.

Works by Goldsworthy in Grizedale included Sidewinder, Cathedral and two site-specific pieces, Cone and Fern, as well as Taking a Wall for a Walk. This is the work that has survived best. While the original ambition for his works was for them to be absorbed back into the forest, the wall has been restored on occasion and remains one of the iconic Grizedale sculptures.
