Jill Randall won an open competition for a 3 month International Residency at Grizedale in 1999, which resulted in this sculpture.

The sculpture contains copper ore rock (copper is a conductor of the elements but also a reference to the local copper mining industry on the Coniston fells) together with contrasting materials with more industrial references.

“The title of the work, “Torment of the Metals”, is an alchemic term, referring to a stage in the allegoric process of transforming base metals into gold, and also references the transformation of the copper from rock subject to great heat and pressure to the manufactured components of the sculpture.”

“A lot of my pieces explore the fine line between order and chaos, by visual devices such as precariousness, or apparent danger, something caught in an instant before it collapses, shifts, or changes completely. ”
